By linking major industrial hubs, ports, and economic zones across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, and neighboring states, regional powers are creating an overland land bridge. Iraq and the Development Road

The push to circumvent traditional sea lanes isn't limited to the southern Gulf states. Further north, Iraq is pushing forward with its ambitious Development Road project.

This $17 billion infrastructure initiative aims to connect the Grand Faw Port in southern Iraq by high-speed rail and motorways all the way to the Turkish border, ultimately linking Persian Gulf cargo directly to European markets. If fully realized, it creates a direct overland corridor competing with the Suez Canal and traditional shipping lanes.

Huge logistical hurdles remain. Financing, regional politics, and security concerns still hang over northern routes. But the sheer volume of capital being committed shows how serious regional governments are about creating redundancy.

What This Means for Global Supply Chains

Diversifying trade infrastructure isn't cheap, and bypassing established maritime routes presents real trade-offs:

  • Capital expenditure: Laying thousands of miles of heavy rail and high-capacity pipelines costs astronomical sums that take decades to recoup.
  • Operational limits: A pipeline or rail car simply cannot match the sheer volume capacity of a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) or massive container ship.
  • Geopolitical shift: Shifting cargo landing points to the Indian Ocean elevates the strategic importance of Oman and Red Sea ports while reducing leverage for states bordering narrow straits.
