Packing enough pills for a multi-year trip to Mars sounds simple until you realize that space destroys medicine. Cosmic radiation and microgravity degrade pharmaceuticals faster than you can say launch window, and you can't just pull over at a pharmacy halfway to the Red Planet. The Expiration Problem in Deep Space

If you take a standard medicine bottle on a long-duration mission, it has an expiration date that shrinks dramatically once it leaves Earth's protective magnetic field. Data from space station formularies show that many drugs lose their chemical stability rapidly due to radiation exposure.

When a crew travels to Mars, a return trip or an emergency resupply mission is physically impossible for months or even years. Running out of critical treatments or watching them turn inert is a fatal hazard.

Turning Tobacco Relatives Into Pharmacies

Scientists are addressing this by using a plant called Nicotiana benthamiana, a close cousin of tobacco, paired with a harmless plant virus known as cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV). While the virus sounds intimidating, it doesn't infect humans. Instead, researchers engineer it to stimulate immune responses and attack tumor cells.

Growing these plants in orbit is straightforward because they scale up biomass quickly. But harvesting the medicine used to be a messy, impractical nightmare.

Traditionally, extracting therapeutic proteins meant chopping up the plant, tossing the leaves into a blender, and processing a thick green smoothie packed with impurities. Doing that requires massive lab equipment that takes up way too much space on a spacecraft.

Extracting Drugs Without Killing the Plant

To get around the equipment bottleneck, researchers developed a clever vacuum-infiltration technique. Instead of destroying the crop, they submerge the leaves in a buffer solution inside a sealed vessel, apply a vacuum to flood the internal spaces of the leaves, and use gentle centrifugation to draw out the liquid.

The target compounds come right out while the plant stays completely intact.
