The ancient mountain steps of Ifugao are sliding apart. For two millennia, the Philippine rice terraces stood as an architectural marvel carved entirely by hand into the steep Cordillera mountains. Today, they are buckling under the weight of extreme weather shifts.
If you visit the amphitheatre-like village of Batad, you will see it immediately. Amidst the emerald-green paddies and the traditional Tinawon rice crops, raw scars of brown earth tear across the slopes. These aren't just aesthetic flaws. They are structural collapses driven by a changing climate that ancient indigenous engineering struggles to outpace.
The Physics Behind the Collapse
Why are these stone-and-mud walls failing now? The answer comes down to moisture balance.
For the terraces to stay locked together, the mountain soil requires a steady, predictable level of internal moisture year-round. Extended dry spells and severe heatwaves alter this balance completely. The earth bakes, shrinks, and fractures, creating deep internal cracks throughout the slopes.
When torrential downpours hit—often intensified by sudden typhoons—water doesn't drain safely through the ancient canal systems. Instead, it rushes aggressively into these hidden drought-cracks. The soil swells instantly, weight distribution shifts, and whole sections of the mountain give way.
Last November, Super Typhoon Fung-wong proved this exact mechanism, triggering a catastrophic landslide in Batad that claimed two lives, destroyed irrigation channels, and wiped out over two hectares of productive paddies.
The Limits of Indigenous Adaptation
For generations, the Ifugao people relied on brilliant ancestral knowledge to protect their lands. They manage local forests, known as muyung, which act as natural sponges and retain water for the irrigation network below. They rebuild stone walls using hand-placed boulders without mortar, allowing minor shifts to absorb normal environmental stress.
Ancient methods weren't designed for modern climate extremes.
Marlon Martin, who heads the Save the Ifugao Terraces Movement (SITMO), points out that local resilience is hitting a wall. Weather patterns are shifting too fast. Super El Nino cycles bring prolonged droughts followed by record-breaking monsoons, testing ancient materials beyond their structural limits.
Worse yet, limited government funding means indigenous communities shoulder the burden of heavy repair work alone. Repairing a single collapsed terrace section requires backbreaking physical labor, precise stone masonry, and weeks of uncompensated work.
Beyond Agriculture
When a rice paddy collapses, it takes more than a crop with it. It threatens a living culture.
The terraces are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site not merely because they look impressive from a drone. They represent an unbroken system of traditional ecological knowledge passed down orally through centuries.
Younger generations face a difficult economic reality. With unpredictable harvests reducing farm incomes, many young Ifugao residents leave the highlands for Manila or overseas work. When youth migrate away, the communal manpower required to maintain the stone walls disappears.
Without targeted financial subsidies and national disaster-proofing frameworks, the physical architecture of the terraces risks becoming impossible to maintain.
Protecting this landscape requires treating it as vital infrastructure. Governments must fund local stone-masonry retention projects, secure water catchment zones, and provide direct support to families who farm the high-altitude steps.
The mountains are speaking. Listen before the stairs to heaven slide away.
