Most people think reefs stay firmly planted beneath the water. They don't expect 100,000 acres of rock and coral to rise ten meters out of the sea twice every single day, spilling millions of liters of roaring whitewater into the open ocean.
Yet off the remote Kimberley coast in Western Australia, about 1,200 miles north of Perth, that's exactly what happens.
It's called Montgomery Reef, or Yowjab to the Dambimangari Traditional Owners who have lived along this coast for tens of thousands of years. Spanning roughly 400 square kilometers, it's the largest inshore reef on Earth. For most of the day, it lies submerged and invisible under the Indian Ocean. According to Dambimangari tradition, the violent movement of the tides at Yowjab was born from a heartbreak. A Wandjina creation spirit woman lost her son while he was hunting on a raft near the reef. Grieving and angry at the sea when he didn't return, she struck the saltwater with her raft, poking the eye of the ancestral rainbow serpent (Wunggurr). The resulting struggle created the whirlpools, rushing currents, and massive daily tides that dominate the reef today.
Today, Montgomery Reef sits inside the Lalang-gaddam Marine Park. It's jointly managed by Dambimangari Traditional Owners and the Western Australian government. Dambimangari rangers actively monitor biodiversity, enforce conservation rules, and protect sacred sites across the archipelago.
Walking on the reef top is strictly forbidden to protect fragile living algae and respect cultural boundaries. Anchoring inside the main channels is also prohibited to keep boat hulls from tearing up the sea floor.
